Good thanks 2022, January 2022
London
My first few weeks in London.
My latest work a self portrait series, titled Good thanks 2022 is a black and white photographic montage of my smile and a portrait taken mid-way through me thanking people for their advice on how I can become less sleepy in London winter.
Mum once said to me when I was sad to smile anyway, she said it’ll trick my brain into thinking that I am actually happy. This was a technique that I desperately drew upon on around Christmas last year, it’s strange the things you remember your mum saying. In that moment of despair I saw my reflection, smiling through my own shock and grief.
This reflection of myself with a false smile stuck with me and I felt compelled to create a work about it.
Good thanks 2022 pays homage to the ‘Betty Draper’ mad men ‘keeping up appearances’ smile. As a white privileged woman I sat in my London living room and smiled for the camera after whitening my teeth the night before.
