Photographing the Full Moon in Morocco
Hello… To my first ever readers of my first ever newsletter, I am so happy the moment is here.
W E L C O M E
This space will be where I share more intimately about things that I love & find interesting. Including projects that I am working on, realisations in my travels, life as a photographer, interviews with people that I admire, darkroom tips, the beauty of lostness & I might even include the occasional recipe that is making me feel good. I am always happy to answer any questions that you many have in the comments.
Let’s begin with the story of my latest print order | Photographing the full moon in Morocco |
A couple of months ago I organised a trip to Morocco to celebrate my dear friend. 7 women gathered from different corners of the world - Australia, France, Poland & Switzerland. We landed in Marrakech
- A vibrant dream.
A real feast for the senses, the technicolour spices, the long rooftop lunches, the motorbikes whizzing by 2cm away from us, dark purple pomegranate juice pressed in front of our eyes, the stunning details of our airbnb Riad, the hammam ritual scrub. It was the place I kept seeing 22 or 222… So I figure this is definitely where I was meant to be.
We headed out of Marrakech for a night in the Agafay desert… It also felt like somewhere in a dream. We arrived at our accomodation, Scarabeo Camp, overlooking the Atlas Mountains & reminding me of something out of Harry Potter. This is where I planned for us to meet a local astronomist after dinner. We were keen to take a good look at the full moon.
On this very special evening we took turns in looking at the full moon & learning about the galaxy. I had my Hasselblad X1D on me & after a few attempts of photographing through the telescope - I got something that I loved.
I could stare at it all day.
This Moroccan full moon is now available in print (largest size available 100x140cm, $440AUD inc GST). Email ask@gabconnole.com if you would like to place an order. (Shipping worldwide)
As I processed my photographs of Morocco, I had bowies Space Oddity blasting. It’s quite therapeutic for me… Spending time thinking about space while looking at the full moon in the Agafay Desert. As a teenager I would look at the distance that the Earth was from our nearest star & it would bring me a sense of peace. Get this, our solar system to Proxima Centauri is 4.243 light years or about 40.1 trillion kms. So if we were travelling in a car at about 100km/hr it would take over 40.6 million years to drive from Earth to Proxima Centauri. (& that’s not including rest stops!)
The Moroccan Moon print is my reminder of the vastness we are a part of. The moon is seen as a symbol of femininity and nurturing energy, a reminder of the constant and natural changes in life. This photograph gives me perspective and appreciation for this life here on Earth. And I hope this photographic print brings that same energy into the spaces it finds itself in.
Thank you to Morocco for opening your arms and welcoming us into the magic. It was such a pleasure to discover this place, if you’re thinking of visiting Marrakech - I am happy to give you some recommendations & introduce you to an amazing driver.
